Emergency Shelter Program




Apna Ghar is a domestic violence agency located on the north side of Chicago. Our mission is to provide comprehensive multilingual, multicultural social services and shelter to South Asian and other immigrant women seeking lives free from violence. We provide a wide range of services from emergency shelter and transitional housing to legal advocacy, counseling, and child visitation.

The Apna Ghar Emergency Shelter is currently seeking to fill a position for Resident Advocate. The position is Full Time (35-40 hours a week).


Job Description:

  1. To fill five shifts per week. Will be required to do at least 1 weekend and 1 night shift per week.

  2. To answer the 24-hour crisis hotline by providing support and referrals.

  3. To provide case management to clients who are victims of domestic abuse by developing goals regarding housing, employment, childcare, public benefits, etc.

  4. To document in a timely and complete manner daily contact with clients as well as weekly updates, and to provide written communication to inform other advocates of the status of clients and shelter.

  5. To enforce house rules with clients.

  6. To attend weekly shelter and office meetings in order to keep advised of client’s progress and general office developments.

  7. To ensure the shelter is kept clean and to monitor clients’ housekeeping responsibilities and report any repair/maintenance needs to shelter supervisor.

  8. To treat each client with respect and dignity knowing that only she can make decisions affecting her life.

  9. To facilitate support groups on life skills and resident issues.


Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and two years experience in social work or related field.

  2. Experience in working with victims of domestic violence.

  3. Bilingual in any Asian, African, Middle Eastern or European language preferred.

  4. 40 Hour Domestic Violence training required.

  5. Resident of Chicago preferred.

  6. Be available to work all shifts.

  1. Punctuality is a must.

  2. Apna Ghar has very strict rules concerning confidentiality. Confidentiality of clients, locations, and issues must be maintained at all times.

  3. Observe a vigilance of boundaries.

  4. Maintain a strong code of ethics.
