Ghar, Inc.
"Apna Ghar"
takes its name from a Hindi-Urdu phrase meaning “Our Home”. Its mission
is to provide multi-lingual, multi-cultural comprehensive services to Asian
women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Apna Ghar helps to
enhance their sense of dignity and self-respect, and seeks to end the cycle of
violence that devastates many families.
Resident
Advocate
The Apna
Ghar shelter is currently seeking a resident advocate person specializing in
children’s services.
The position
is full time (40 hours a week) with complete benefits. Position begins August
1, 2005.
Job
Description:
- Assist with clients in
developing goals regarding housing, job training, child care, public
benefits, etc
- Document in a timely and
complete manner daily contact with clients, written communication in log
to inform other advocates of
current status of clients and shelter.
- Enforce house rules with
clients.
- Attend weekly shelter and
office meetings to keep advised of client’s progress and general office
developments.
- Ensure the shelter is kept
clean, monitor clients’ housekeeping responsibilities and report any
repair/maintenance needs to shelter supervisor.
- Treat each client with respect
and dignity knowing that only she can make decisions affecting her life.
- Should be able to facilitate
support group(s).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and two years
experience in social work or related field.
- Experience in working with
victims of domestic violence.
- Bilingual in at least one Asian
language preferred. Also Arabic.
- 40 hours domestic violence
training preferred
- Resident of Chicago preferred.
- Be available to work all
shifts.
