Apna Ghar, Inc.

 

"Apna Ghar" takes its name from a Hindi-Urdu phrase meaning “Our Home”.  Its mission is to provide multi-lingual, multi-cultural comprehensive services to Asian women and children who are victims of domestic violence.  Apna Ghar helps to enhance their sense of dignity and self-respect, and seeks to end the cycle of violence that devastates many families.

Resident Advocate

The Apna Ghar shelter is currently seeking a resident advocate person specializing in children’s services. 

The position is full time (40 hours a week) with complete benefits. Position begins August 1, 2005.

 

Job Description:

  1. Assist with clients in developing goals regarding housing, job training, child care, public benefits, etc
  2. Document in a timely and complete manner daily contact with clients, written communication in log to inform  other advocates of current status of clients and shelter.
  3. Enforce house rules with clients.
  4. Attend weekly shelter and office meetings to keep advised of client’s progress and general office developments.
  5. Ensure the shelter is kept clean, monitor clients’ housekeeping responsibilities and report any repair/maintenance needs to shelter supervisor.
  6. Treat each client with respect and dignity knowing that only she can make decisions affecting her life.
  7. Should be able to facilitate support group(s). 

 

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree and two years experience in social work or related field.
  2. Experience in working with victims of domestic violence.
  3. Bilingual in at least one Asian language preferred. Also Arabic.
  4. 40 hours domestic violence training preferred
  5. Resident of Chicago preferred.
  6. Be available to work all shifts.
