Shelter

Our 24-hour emergency shelter provides women and their children who are escaping abuse with a home-like atmosphere in which to heal and establish self-reliance and dignity for up to 90 days. Care is taken to maintain a culturally appropriate environment and services in a safe, welcoming atmosphere.

The journey of healing begins with an intake process to determine all the needs of the particular client. This process is the basis of developing a service plan. While at the shelter, women may take part in counseling, legal advocacy, support groups, parenting classes, conflict management and communication training, art therapy and parent-child cultural and recreational activities.

In fiscal 2008, Apna Ghar provided 3,276 days of shelter to 50 women and 17 children.

Transitional Living

Seven transitional housing apartments are available for women and their children for a period of 9-18 months. Supportive services such as counseling, job training and referrals are provided during this period. Women and their children use this time to attain long-term self-sufficiency.
