ART SHOW
Apna Ghar's art therapy program allows our art therapists to work with survivors regardless of culture, background and primary language. Art therapy allows survivors to utilize the creative process of art to express themselves, tell their stories, and heal through art.
Our annual art show seeks to explore issues around immigration/refugee rights, gender violence, wellness, disabilities and mental health. The show features art created by survivors of gender violence and advocates for the cause. We also have an opening reception that includes a panel discussion, performances and refreshments.

Work with Community Artists
This past fall Apna Ghar collaborated with a few community artists to engage survivors in the process of art-making, exposing them to various new art techniques where learning a new skill and interacting with these artists became a source of empowerment. Here are a few samples from the workshops.

Project: Block Printing
I wanted to give the women in our group the chance to make professional artist's choices ... creative choices. Sometimes, being aware what one is not skilled at a task can be a hindrance, but in creative work, only the assumption that you cannot do something, or don't have the skills, is the hindrance. Many professional artists call on printmakers to produce prints of their work, without that artist actually learning the medium or executing the work themselves. I wanted to give the residents of Apna Ghar the benefit of this tradition. My project with the women in our group was to offer opportunities for marking decisions.
Below are some variations of the block print. This was a collaborative image carved on linoleum by clients and artists.

Project: Finger Puppetry
We often communicate using our hands and they have became a powerful tool to tell our story. Through language barriers and culture differences, I wanted to help the survivors explore their narratives and share their stories with their hands. During this project what emerged was a powerful sense of community and togetherness. What you see in the video is not only women sharing their stories, but also a meaningful witness of their lives.
